RAW Certification

RAW packaging products are produced using paper from our partners envoPAP. This paper has been run through an LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), done by Intertek, a well known and trusted assessor. Using the framework from ISO14040, SimaPro9 & ecoinvent to measure the environmental impact and declare results of a comparison to wood fibre paper from European mills.

The LCA completed in 2019 was a field assessment, done on-site from crop waste collection in India, all the way through to recycling the paper in the UK.

These results have shown that RAW paper has a reduction of 28% in carbon emissions, lower wildlife and sea-life impact, lower environmental impact, energy saving and is compostable, biodegradable, marine degradable and recyclable, in comparison to traditional wood fibre paper.

What is SimaPro & ecoinvent?

SimaPro9 and ecoinvent are software programs used for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies, which are used to evaluate the environmental impacts of products and services throughout their entire life cycle.

SimaPro9 is a commercial software developed by PRé Sustainability, and it allows users to create and analyze LCA models using a wide range of methods and databases. With SimaPro9, users can model different life cycle stages, calculate environmental impacts, and generate reports.

ecoinvent is a comprehensive database of environmental data, which is widely used in LCA studies. The database includes data on raw materials, energy production, transport, and waste management, among other things. ecoinvent provides data on the environmental impacts of different activities throughout their entire life cycle, including greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion, and human toxicity.

SimaPro9 and ecoinvent are often used together, as SimaPro9 can import ecoinvent data and use it to perform LCA analyses. This combination is commonly used by companies, governments, and researchers to evaluate the environmental impacts of products and services, and to identify opportunities to reduce environmental impacts.

The paper used to create RAW packaging has been tested using these programs and under the guidelines of ISO14040 through a trusted third party LCA company. The environmental impact measurements for RAW packaging were undertaken by field testers on site, giving assurance that the data has been collected correctly and the results of the LCA are authentic.

What is ISO14040?

ISO 14040 is a set of international standards for conducting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies. It provides a framework for evaluating the environmental impacts of products and services throughout their entire life cycle, from raw material extraction to disposal or recycling.

The ISO 14040 standard consists of four parts:

    1. ISO 14040: Environmental management – Life cycle assessment – Principles and framework This part provides the general principles and framework for conducting LCA studies, including the goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment, and interpretation.
    2. ISO 14041: Environmental management – Life cycle assessment – Goal and scope definition and inventory analysis This part provides guidelines for defining the goal and scope of the LCA study and conducting the inventory analysis, which involves identifying and quantifying the inputs and outputs of the product or service throughout its life cycle.
    3. ISO 14042: Environmental management – Life cycle assessment – Impact assessment This part provides guidelines for conducting the impact assessment, which involves evaluating the environmental impacts of the product or service by using specific indicators and models.
    4. ISO 14043: Environmental management – Life cycle assessment – Interpretation This part provides guidelines for interpreting the results of the LCA study and communicating them to stakeholders, including recommendations for improving the environmental performance of the product or service.

ISO 14040 is widely used by organisations, governments, and researchers around the world to assess the environmental impacts of products and services and to identify opportunities for improvement.

The paper used to create RAW Packaging products has been tested under the framework ISO14040, giving the assurance that the correct procedures for testing environmental impacts have been used and the LCA data provided is verified through Intertek with the use of SimaPro9 and ecoinvent.

Who are envoPAP?

envoPAP makes innovative packaging and paper that’s kind to the planet. Their production process has a significantly smaller environmental footprint than traditional packaging and paper products because we use renewable sources like agro-fibres as raw material instead of virgin fibres and fuel-based materials, like plastic.
